Have you have ever dreamed of being a secret agent and travelling the world to obtain important information or evidence? How about using all those cool gadgets that James Bond had? Well, you may not have a mandate from the government or a license to kill, but you can at least get your hands on some cool gadgets that will make you feel like the real deal. Here are some of the latest developments in Spytech.
A staple of spytech is the miniature camera, used to record stills or video. There have recently been great leaps in the technology used to make cameras in ever decreasing size. Now there are many available “pin-hole” cameras that allow for extremely discreet recording or surveillance. Some of the most popular are hidden in hats. With their small size, you can have the camera, battery and storage media all concealed in a regular looking hat. Many of these use a remote control to start and stop recording and you can capture a wide angle view wherever you point your head. If you want to go even smaller, you can even get a camera hidden in a writing pen or a battery like DELL Inspiron 1521 battery! Perfect for the office or a meeting.
If you need a listening device you will find that there are a lot of great choices. Using digital technology has shrunk the size of these devices greatly and they also now come in a variety of great disguises. There are listening devices that look like air purifiers, alarm clocks, or even an electrical plug adapter. Some of these devices utilize motion sensors to turn on and begin listening and recording only when someone enters the room. The devices can be left to operate on their own and save data for a later download.
Another indispensable spy tool is the tracking device. These small electronic transmitters can be used to track vehicles or keep track of the location of personnel. Their small size and efficiency allows them to be easily hidden. Some can be activated by movement to save battery usage. They use strong magnets to attach to a vehicle and can provide real-time location information. These are useful to private investigators, fraud investigators, and company motor pool personnel. Another application for tracking is using small tracking devices to attach to valuable items to keep their location known. Because the technology has advanced, these trackers are now small enough to be discreetly attached to items like expensive equipment or computers. They can even be used to track people.
Whatever your mission, there are certainly enough cool gadgets out there to get the job done.
There used to be one in every neighborhood or at least one in every town. Now the hometown hobby store is becoming a thing of the past. Blame it on video games, the internet, or a flagging economy but it seems that every year more and more of these stores close. Which begs the question, do we still need hobby stores in the age of the internet?
Unlike toy stores, hobby stores are much more than a collection of toys stacked on shelves; they are a doorway to explore a child’s (or adult’s) interest. You could say that they hobby stores are far more interactive. Most things in the store need to be built, tested, or at least assembled before you can play with them. And really, isn’t that half the fun? I grew out of toys pretty quickly in my youth, I wanted to be playing outside mostly, but when the weather turned bad I was lucky to have my hobbies. For me, like a lot of boys, it was model airplanes and trains. I could while away the hours building something that was interesting to me. This outlet also helped me explore the things that I would become interested in.
That was the thing about the hobby store; you didn’t just pick something out and start playing. You wandered around and sought out something that piqued your interest. I can still remember the feeling as a model was approaching completion; a mix of accomplishment and excitement. Not only did I have something wonderful to play with, but I knew that I had made it myself. Not only that, but unlike toy stores, hobby stores were a place to meet with other folks who shared your interests.
So what can save the local hobby shop? Online purchasing has been a big factor in narrowing the market for local shops and not many shops have been able to adapt fast enough, or spend the capital to sell online. When combined with a slow economy and waning interest in hands-on hobbies, this has been a very hard decade for local shops.
Many people say that children today don’t have the patience for hobbies and prefer the instant gratification of video games and the internet. While it is true that those things are very popular, I believe that they can go hand in hand with more traditional hobbies if the interests are fostered in kids.
Our neighborhood hobby shop was full of everything from race cars, to model airplane, to dollhouses and painting supplies. Just a walk through one was exciting to a young boy with a big imagination. Encouraging kids to pursue interests such as a hobby are a proven way to develop problem solving and mental development. If neighborhood hobby storesdisappear, this type of experience will be lost on all the generations that follow.
